It is one of the oldest textile arts and the practice has been dated to at least 20,000 years ago. Early needles were made out of bone, antlers, leather, glass, porcelain and ivory. Some early needles were natural needles taken from plants. Thread was made out of various animal body parts and plant fibers. Iron needles and thimbles were invented around the 14th century. The thimble was invented to assist in hand sewing to push needles through thick hides and furs. The first eyed needles were invented in the 15th century. Sewing is used in all sorts of crafts and industries and is the fundamental process underlying a variety of textile arts and crafts. The simplest stitches to the most ornate were done by hand until the invention of the sewing machine in the 19th century. The first sewing machine used a single thread and a hooked needle to make a chain stitch. |
